Abstract

Malaria is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa, where there is also a high prevalence of sickling. This high frequency of HbAS is believed to be a result of the innate resistance to malaria conferred on carriers of the HbS variant. The aim of this work is to describe the mechanisms conferred by sickling as a protective factor against malaria, for which a narrative literature review was carried out. Multiple studies corroborate the protective nature of HbAS against malaria and several hypotheses of molecular mechanisms as well as immune system reactions are pointed out. However, although multiple studies have been carried out on sickle cell disease as a protective factor against malaria, they are not conclusive.
